Night of the Wolf Slot Game

High 5 Games introduced Night of the Wolf to slot players in 2013, first on its own Website and then in October to land-based casinos around the world. The game is based on a modern update of the classic werewolf love story.

Werewolves have been popular in modern fiction and cinema since Lon Chaney, Jr. created the popular Larry Talbot character, a man bitten by a Welsh werewolf who then became cursed himself. Across the decades film-makers and authors have added new elements to the classic horror story, inventing whole sub-cultures and magical traditions around the werewolf.

In popular gaming and stories there are rings and potions that prevent werewolves from transforming, or that enable transformations at will. Night of the Wolf features two rings and a potion in clear homage to these concepts. The implied love story adds a touch of romance, but werewolves have always been associated with heartbreak and love since Chaney's day.

High 5 Games uses its popular super stacked and split symbols to make Night of the Wolf more interesting. There is more than one wolf lurking in this game. Will you be lucky when you find them all?

This game is available at land-based casinos, on the Web, on mobile apps, and through RMG Online.

Gameplay Features and Mechanics

Night of the Wolf is a 5-reel, 3-row video slot game featuring 30 pay lines and 8 pre-set coin values. Players can win Free Games and look for super stacks of symbols to enhance their gaming experience. Prizes are awarded from left to right on pay lines. The game also uses split symbols, where some tiles carry double value, allowing for combinations up to 10-of-a-kind and allowing minimum winning combinations to occur on just the two left-most reels.

Special Symbols

The game has two special symbols:

  • The Wild symbol is the game's logo
  • The Red Rose under the full moon is the Bonus Game symbol
Other Symbols

There are four high-value, three mid-value symbols, and three low-value symbols. The high-value symbols are the Man (who turns into a werewolf when his tiles form a winning combination), the Woman, the Red Wolf, and the Green Wolf. The mid-value symbols are the heart-shaped Wolf ring, the red Ruby ring, and the green Potion bottle. The low-value symbols are "A", "K", and "Q".

Graphics

The regular game's backdrop is a wooden door which opens and closes for the bonus rounds. The regular game tiles scroll down against a background image of a moonlit foggy woodland moor, such as is the favored haunt of the dreaded werewolf.

On big wins the game plays a video of coins spraying out from the screen toward you. If you look closely you will see that the emblem on the coins is a wolf head.

Game Controls

Game controls run from left to right across the bottom. You can control the number of pay lines by scrolling up or down through the list. Selectable values include 1 pay line, 5, 9, 15, and 30.

You can also control how much you bet per line by scrolling through up or down through the list of available values:

  • $0.01
  • $0.05
  • $0.10
  • $0.25
  • $1.00
  • $2.00
  • $5.00
  • $10.00

Doing a little math, you'll see that playing a max bet per line against 30 lines will cost you $300 per spin. Be sure that is what you want to do. Your chances of getting a winning combination are not based on how much you bet. Also, in a land-based casino, be sure to set the betting to the way you want it because you don't want to be playing the same way as the last guy on the machine.

To the right of the betting window you'll see how many credits you have left and what you won on the previous spin.

To the right of your win/credits window you'll find the Replay, Question mark, and Sound volume buttons. You can use Replay to check out which pay lines had winning combinations or to watch the animations again. People who like to record their big wins enjoy using the Replay button. The sound control just toggles the sound on and off.

The Auto Play button allows you to choose from 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 spins. The game automatically deducts the credits for your spins for you. It will stop if your available credits falls below the required bet. You can also stop the auto spinning at any time. The Spin button counts down your remaining auto spins.

The Spin button initiates a single game and also doubles as a Stop button. You can only stop the animations. Stopping the spin does not change the outcome of the game, which is decided as soon as you click Spin. Stopping the animations is a way of saving time.

Triggering the Bonus Round

The Bonus Game is triggered when five or more Red Rose symbols appear on the screen. You win from 5 to 15 free games depending on how many roses you won. The roses only appear on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5 so the most you'll see at any time is 8 roses (four split symbols).

A brief video showing the hero changing into a wolf then plays and a dramatic song plays while the Bonus Game is in play.

The Bonus Game uses its own set of reels. The game cannot be retriggered so there are no Red Rose symbols. But all of the high-value symbols use the split / double symbols. The wolf tiles are green and blue, not red and green. The rings and potion are different colors, too.

There are fewer prize combinations for the high-value symbols but they use the same prizes as in the regular game. You may win nothing in a bonus game but your chances of winning larger prizes are increased because of the split symbols.

Conclusion

Night of the Wolf romanticizes the werewolf myth for slots game players. It offers attractive visuals, interesting combinations, and an eye-opening sequence of animated graphics for big groups of high-value and mid-value symbols. The video animations are fun to watch and cool in a geeky way. There is also a translucent quality to the game's graphics that makes them interesting to watch. The designers achieved this effect by leaving out normal colored backgrounds from some of the tiles.

Slot games that use super stacks can be very enjoyable because when a screen full of symbols rolls up your chances of hitting a big win are much better. But the downside to super stacks is that 1 reel can get in the way of your enjoyment. Near-misses can be fun, too, but High 5 Games makes it easier to enjoy the wins with the split symbols.

That is probably the best feature of a game like Night of the Wolf.

There is also a bit of an Easter egg in the Bonus Game transition video. If you look carefully you'll see that as the man transforms into a werewolf and starts howling at the moon his silhouette very closely resembles the classic Wolf Man character popularized by Lon Chaney, Jr. The foggy woodland backdrop is yet another tribute to Chaney's great performances as the tortured Lawrence Talbot.

Hopefully you'll win a nice sum of money when you play this game but one thing's for sure: if you love classic horror movies you'll probably want to binge watch a lot of those old Universal Pictures classics featuring Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Lon Chaney, Jr. Don't be surprised if you start searching for information about their movies. That's normal.
