Overview

What really sets this 5 reel, 25 pay line game apart from other slots more than anything is its graphics. We'd have to say that this is easily the best online slots rendition of Superman from a visual perspective.

When you fire up the game, you see a detailed view of Metropolis in chaos with people running from an explosion.

The symbols are where this slot really shines because they're realistic 3D depictions of the main characters. They include the following:

  • Clark Kent
  • Clark changing to Superman in a phone booth
  • Lois Lane
  • Lex Luthor
  • Kryptonite
  • The Daily Planet
  • Newspapers with letters on them

Many slots games feature generic letters for low paying symbols, so we like how Superman spices them up in the newspaper format.

You also get to see some quality animations when certain winning combinations are formed. For example, Clark opens his suit jacket to reveal the Superman logo, Lex Luthor holds kryptonite while it glows in his hands, the Daily Planet logo spins around and Lois takes pictures.

One more aspect that sets the tone as you play is the music, which sounds just like the dramatic beats that play when Superman faces Lex and other foes in the movies.

The Superman logo is the wild symbol, substituting for everything except Superman, Louis running, and Lex Luthor. The logo is also the highest paying symbol, earning you 5,000 coins when it appears five times in a pay line.

When three Clark Kent symbols appear on the reels, you receive a regular payout before he morphs into logo wild symbols. These wilds of course give you a chance at more winning combinations, or even the top 5,000 coin payout.

Return to Player Percentage

Return to player is 95.41%, which is about average for an online slots game.

Betting Options

You must play all 25 pay lines, but you can change coin size from $0.01 to $1.00.

You can also choose to bet 25, 50, 75, 100, or 125 credits per spin. This essentially acts like the coins per line option in many games, where you put anywhere from 1 to 5 coins on each pay line.

The minimum bet per spin is $0.25, and the maximum bet is $125 when you max out the coin size and credits per spin.

Also keep in mind that you can use the auto play feature to perform anywhere from 5 to 100 straight spins with your selected betting options.

Bonus

Superman features two different bonus rounds:

  • Lois Lane Wild Hearts
  • Lex Luthor Frozen Wild
Lois Lane Wild Hearts

You unlock the Lois Lane Wild Hearts feature by getting Superman on reel 1 and Lois on reel 5.

This brings up 5 pictures of Lois, and you select one to determine how many free spins and what multiplier you'll receive. When we chose a Lois, we got 20 free spins along with a 2x multiplier.

You then travel to Lois' office where the reels begin spinning. During these spins, Wild Hearts show up on reels 2, 3, and 4 and serve as multipliers.

We earned 200 coins w / 2x multiplier during the free spin and, better yet, triggered the Lex Luthor Frozen Wild.

Lex Luthor Frozen Wild

This is triggered by getting Superman in reel 1 and Lex in reel 5.You're then prompted to choose one of 5 Lex pictures to see how many free spins and what multiplier you'll receive. The Lex that we chose only resulted in 5 free spins and a 2x multiplier.

You then head high above Metropolis, where Superman and Lex face off in a battle over your payouts.

Superman is obviously on your side, blowing on reels 2, 3, 4 and / or 5 to turn them into ice and create frozen wilds. Lex, on the other hand, shoots his laser to break up the ice and rob you of more winning combinations.

During the regular game, we had a hard time triggering either the Lex Luthor Frozen Wild or Louis Wild Hearts round. In fact, it probably took 200 to 300 spins before the Lois round came up.

However, once we did get the Lois Wild Hearts feature, it only took a few more spins before the Lex Luthor round came up too.

Comparison to CryptoLogic's Superman Slot

Before being acquired by Amaya, CryptoLogic produced their own version of Superman. So Amaya's Superman: Last Son of Krypton is not only a take on the 1978 novel by Elliot S. Maggin, but also a sequel to CryptoLogic's version.

One key difference is that Superman slots have less detail, yet more comic book like graphics. This is good in its own way, but we found Last Son of Krypton's graphics to be superior.

The symbols are also different because, in addition to Superman, Louis and Lex Luthor, you'll also see a tank, falling train car, kryptonite, the Daily Planet and Clark's glasses. The glasses are the only element of Clark in this game, which we thought was a good thing since there are too many symbols covering him in Last Son of Krypton.

The game structure is different because the older version features 50 pay lines. You only have to play one of them, but if you want to be eligible for the Save the World feature, you need to use the Bonus Bet option.

This forces you to wager 50 pay lines, plus an extra 10 coins. Assuming you're betting one cent per line, this is still $0.60 per spin.

But if you can trigger the Save the World feature by getting three or more scatter logos on the reels, the spin cost is worth it.

As for Save the World, this takes you to a second screen where Superman must fly through a meteor shower to destroy missiles. Once Superman reaches Earth, you choose one of three lead line doors.

One of the doors is full of kryptonite and will end your game; one is full of hostages and awards you a bonus prize; and one door contains Lex Luthor, whom you capture and earn 100x your triggering bet.

You can also get 10 free spins by landing Superman on reels 2, 3, and 4. During these free spins, Superman will randomly appear as an expanded wild and multiply your wins by 3x or 5x.

If we're just comparing bonus rounds, we'd have to say that Superman slots has the edge thanks to the Save the World feature. This second screen game is just a little more fun than the Lois Wild Hearts and Lex Luthor Frozen Wild in Last Son of Krypton.

However, in terms of overall game quality and graphics, we definitely think that Superman: Last Son of Krypton has advanced this series to another level.

Summary

This slot has remained popular ever since Amaya released it in 2014. And it's little wonder why when you consider that Superman: Last Son of Krypton has stellar graphics, decent features and a tried and true story line behind it.

But if there's one aspect that we could improve upon, it would be a more intriguing second screen bonus round like that in Superman slots. The Lois Wild Hearts and Lex Luthor Frozen Wild are certainly good features, but we've seen better throughout the slots world.

However, this is just a small flaw in a game that you'll most likely enjoy, no matter if you're a Superman fan or just somebody who likes spinning the reels.
